Has the law school considered potential solutions? One thought I have is to have either specialized JD programs (such as tax, litigation, environmental) or to have combined JD, LL.M. programs. This could reduce the number of JD only students, while using the resources and faculty of the Law School to make more competitive graduates.

Ron Cappuccio, L '76Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18368503684577766925noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4605610088106914185.post-57358543136511014382011-04-15T10:11:14.612-05:002011-04-15T10:11:14.612-05:00Very interesting. Their salary data omission is the heart of the NY Times article.

The “realities of the current demand for attorneys” include an equally real bi-modal salary distribution. That means a handful of graduates from a typical law school receive a starting salary in excess of $145,000. This handful causes an inflated skewing of the average salary in the private sector (for the 40% that go to work in the private sector, still ignoring salaries for the elephant in the room that is the 60% of the class).

A morally reasonable start would be the use of a median salary alongside the simple average.
Specifically, 10 of the 63 KU law graduates accepting private sector legal positions with salaries in excess of $145k annually can mask the struggles 30 or more students in the private sector making less than 30k.

KU possesses the median salary data for this 40% segment of KU law grads.

KU is aware of the realities of the current demand for attorneys that include a very real bi-modal salary distribution skew in the private sector.

KU is aware that the median is critical to fair reporting when such distorting statistical anomalies are present in any data pool.

Yet KU still reports the simple average of the few (40%) with little or no salary data for the majority (60%).John Galthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09061964501225163522noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4605610088106914185.post-47307015961030802252011-02-10T10:20:53.553-06:002011-02-10T10:20:53.553-06:00Posted on behalf of Todd Rogers, Assistant Dean fo...Posted on behalf of Todd Rogers, Assistant Dean for Career Services:

John Galt,

To characterize graduates who were unable to secure "bar passage required" positions as "lost graduates" is to misunderstand the realities of the current demand for attorneys. To suggest that we are somehow hiding the ball is to ignore the detailed employment information we present on our website.

156 of the 160 members of the class of 2009 graduates reported their employment status.

Private sector salaries include both legal and nonlegal jobs in the private sector. The salary average for the 63 students reporting private practice jobs was $79,259. This represented 90% of all students reporting private practice employment.

The recession certainly has put a damper on graduates' ability to secure "bar passage required" positions. Ninety-seven members of the class of 2009 accepted "bar passage required" positions. Over the past eight years, the highest percentage of KU Law grads accepting such positions was 74.5% (class of 2002), and the lowest was 62.2% reported by the class of 2009.

In the class of 2009, 13 graduates accepted "JD preferred" positions and another 15 accepted other professional positions. Of the remaining 31 students responding to our survey, 6 reported nonprofessional employment, 5 returned to school to pursue another advanced degree, 6 reported that they were not seeking employment, and 14 were seeking employment when last surveyed 9 months after graduation.Mindie Pagethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04118221140496639259noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4605610088106914185.post-52922587240785258792011-02-09T14:23:34.534-06:002011-02-09T14:23:34.534-06:00From the Dean's office: "63 members of th...From the Dean's office: "63 members of the Class of 2009 reported a private practice law salary. See...http://www.law.ku.edu/about/staff/paget.shtml

Seeing that this article was written by the school's Director of Communications & Marketing, it is a little suspect. After all, the school has an interest in people believing that law school is still a good investment.

Right off the bat, you state that Segal "alleges" that schools overstate employment prospects. This is uncontroverted fact. US News, NALP, ABA Journal and several "law professors" have admitted that schools game the rankings. Perhaps, KU Law thinks that these terms are interchangeable.

In your above comment, you note that the law school has touched base with nearly all recent graduates - to determine employment status. (A salesperson at the University of Utah looked me in the eye, and said the school had 100% report employment status. She then added, "I used to be a lawyer and I know how to track people down.") Back to your school: what percentage of recent grads reported their starting salaries?

To Todd Rogers and Mindie Paget,

Keeping in mind that those with higher incomes are MUCH more likely to report their salary, is it your position that about 97% of recent KU Law grads reported their income? This is a basic way in which schools can deceive students, i.e. reporting a high rate of employment in conjuntion with a nice average starting salary gives prospective students the impression that THEY will end up making a decent salary upon graduation.Nandohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06423524039657355134noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4605610088106914185.post-56090336467517061452011-01-26T09:33:18.743-06:002011-01-26T09:33:18.743-06:00Luckily,

Our “employment status known” percentage was 98.2%.

Three students didn’t report in the class of 2007, and our “employment status known” percentage it was 98.1%.

You may be a member of the class of 2010. If that’s the case, we’re in the final stages of collecting employment information from your class. We will submit our final report to the National Association for Law Placement at the end of February.

Todd RogersMindie Pagethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04118221140496639259noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4605610088106914185.post-63513934533950697402011-01-25T15:52:39.710-06:002011-01-25T15:52:39.710-06:00Mr. Rogers,
You're also not providing us all ...Mr. Rogers,

You're also not providing us all the relevant numbers. How many alumni aren't reporting? In my own class, I know of a dozen classmates who refuse to report their status to Career Services and joke about how they're not going to help KU because KU didn't help them. About half of them are employed in "bar admission required" jobs and half are unemployed. And that's only from the people I have touched base with over the last month.

What's the actual number of graduates versus the number of reporting back to Career Services? Until KU Law can get survey participation percentages into 90th percentile, what good are your numbers?

My own observations are anecdotal in the grand scheme of things, but when I know specifically of a dozen classmates not reporting... it makes a monumental difference in your numbers.Luckily Employedhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03303389223859473712noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4605610088106914185.post-73410785537908616402010-12-04T16:58:25.512-06:002010-12-04T16:58:25.512-06:00See also:
